Sharp Notes Monday: ‘I’m on the Outside (Looking In)’

While our Sharp Notes, Sharp Thoughts music and social media project was on hiatus for the summer, we shared a song every Monday to start your week. We’ve decided to make Sharp Notes Monday a permanent feature.

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments today in a case that will determine the future of affirmative action in higher education.

In the past the court has ruled that colleges and universities may take race into account in their admission processes as a means of providing equal education opportunities for racial and ethnic groups. Now, opponents are challenging the policy, charging that it violates equal protection principles.

It will be a while before the court hands down a decision. In the interim, the title of this 1964 hit single by Little Anthony and the Imperial seems to sum up the sentiments of those who feel they were denied an equal opportunity for a college education: “I’m on the Outside (Looking In).”
