Upstate New Yorkers Favor Santa Over Cuomo

Gov. Andrew Cuomo isn’t the only public figure whose popularity varies around New York State.

A Nov. 18 Siena College Research Institute survey found that more upstate residents believe in Santa Claus than do other New Yorkers.

According to the survey, 33% of the upstate respondents said they believe in Santa. Just 21% of the New York City respondents said they believed in him. The number was only slightly higher in the suburbs – 23%.

The institute defines upstate as all counties outside of New York City and suburban as Long Island, Westchester, Putnam, Rockland and Orange counties

Unlike Santa, the governor is not as popular in upstate New York. According to the institute’s Nov. 24 poll of New York State registered voters, Cuomo has a 45% favorability rating with upstate voters. This contrasts with a 68% favorability rating in New York City and 51% in the suburbs.
