Janis Joplin died 50 years ago today. When I was in high school, I took a train to New York City with a friend to see Janis in concert at Madison Square Garden. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band opened the show, and Johnny Winter made a surprise appearance.
Joplin easily lived up to the accolades she received a year earlier when a young Washington Post reporter reviewed her performance at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columba, Maryland. The reporter’s name was Carl Bernstein.
