Sharp Notes Monday: ‘Big Yellow Taxi’

Earth Day was only one year old when Joni Mitchell wrote “Big Yellow Taxi” in 1970, but the song captured the spirit on the burgeoning environmental movement. Sadly, the lyrics still ring true today.

Mitchell warns of a time when all tress are placed in a museum, where people can view them for a price. She urges farmers to refrain from using chemicals on their crops. And she bemoans a paradise that has been paved over into a parking lot.

Perhaps the most poignant Earth Day message from this week’s Sharp Notes Monday selection is the refrain: “You don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone.”

As part of our “Sharp Notes, Sharp Thoughts” music and social media project, we share a song every Monday to start your week.
