Tonight, NBC will broadcast a three-hour special on the musicians who have appeared during the 50-year history of Saturday Night Live.
The biggest names in the industry — Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen and many more — have appeared as musical guests.
The show also has had its share of controversial performances. Sinead O’Connor, Tom Morello, Elvis Costello, Kanye West and Fear are among the artists who have butted heads whose appearances on the show are remembered for more than their music.
The history of music on Saturday Night Live reflects the story of America over the past 50 years. Fortunately, there is more to come, which is why “One More Saturday Night” is this week’s Sharp Notes Monday selection.
Richard Lee, executive director of the Jandoli Institute, is a former music journalist who often writes about the intersection of music and current events.
