Sharp Notes Monday: ‘Me and Bobby McGee’

By Richard Lee

Kris Kristifferson, an American icon, died Monday at his home in Maui, Hawaii. He was 88.

Kristifferson left an impact on American culture as a songwriter, as a vocalist, as a musician and as a actor.

“Me and Bobby McGee” is Kristifferson’s best known composition. The song has been covered many times, most notably by Janis Joplin. It’s our choice to honor Kristifferson on Sharp Notes Monday, but plenty of other songs in his catalog are well worth a listen.

Richard Lee, executive director of the Jandoli Institute, is a former music journalist who often writes about the intersection of music and current events.
