Horse race journalism (podcast)

One of the greatest criticisms of the way the media covers political campaigns is that coverage of the issues that matter most to voters takes a backseat to coverage of polls, endorsements, fundraising and ads.

As political scientist Larry Bartels once wrote, “In covering a presidential campaign, the media tell us more about who is winning and who is losing than they do about who is fit to be president.”

St. Bonaventure University students Riley Mitchell, Iesh Gujral, Sullivan Murphy and Jack Valenti discussed what is commonly known as “horse race journalism” in a podcast recorded at Oxford University’s Trinity College, where they studied this summer.
