John Lennon wrote “I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party” about being stood up at a party and deciding to leave so he won’t spoil the fun for the other guests.
But the lyrics sound very much like the sentiments President Joe Biden may be feeling after he announced he was withdrawing his candidacy in the 2024 race for the White House.
The opening line — “I don’t wanna spoil the party so I’ll go” — could be the voice of a candidate who realizes his chances of re-election are slim and knows his party will be better positioned to win if he leaves the race.
In deciding to withdraw, Biden put on a strong face because, as the next line says, “I would hate my disappointment to show.”
Later in the song, another line sounds like it could have been uttered by the president: “I wonder what went wrong, I’ve waited far too long.”
And in Biden’s case, the party he does not want to spoil is a Party with a capital P – the Democratic Party.
