Sharp Notes Monday: ‘Hush’

Before “Smoke on the Water” became Deep Purple’s signature song, the band had an early hit with a cover of “Hush,” which Joe South had written for Billy Joe Royal.

Deep Purple’s version fared much better than the original and still makes for a good listen — perhaps more so today in light of former President Donald Trump’s conviction last week on 34 counts of falsifying business records.

The charges evolved from “hush money” payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels to keep her from going public about a sexual encounter with Trump, an encounter the former president denies.

The case is far from over as Trump has vowed to appeal. The appeal process is expected to be a lenghty one. In the interim, crank up the volume and listen to this week’s Sharp Notes Monday selection — Deep Purple’s 1968 version of “Hush.”

As part of our “Sharp Notes, Sharp Thoughts” music and social media project, we share a song every Monday to start your week.
