Sharp Notes Monday: ‘The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest’

Michael Cohen, an attorney who was part of Donald Trump’s inner circle for more than 10 years, will testify against the former president in a criminal trial in Manhattan today.

Some view Cohen as a betrayer, so songs with “Judas” in the title came to mind as we searched for this week’s Sharp Notes Monday selection. We quickly settled on Bob Dylan’s “The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest.” Not only is “Judas” in the title, but the storyline has similarities to Trump and Cohen’s relationship.

In the song, Frankie Lee and Judas Priest “were the best of friends,” so when Frankie needed help, Judas came to his aid and lent him money. In court today, Cohen is expected to testify about coming to Trump’s aid by playing a role in an arrangement to prevent a damaging story about his former boss from going public.

That story involved an adult film actress. In the song, Frankie goes to a brothel, where he spends the money Judas lent him.

What we will learn from Cohen’s testimony remains to be seen, but odds are the results will differ from one of the final lines of the song: “Nothing is revealed.”

As part of our “Sharp Notes, Sharp Thoughts” music and social media project, we share a song every Monday to start your week.
