Since tomorrow is Super Tuesday when delegates for 15 states and one U.S. territory are up for grabs, a song with Tuesday in the title would be a logical choice for Sharp Notes Monday this week. The Rolling Stones’ “Ruby Tuesday” and the Moody Blues’ “Tuesday Afternoon” are two of the first to come to mind.
But the day of the week is less significant than what traditionally occurs on Super Tuesday. Victorious candidates survive and move on; losing candidates must decide if they can keep their campaigns alive.
This year’s Super Tuesday will provide less drama than usual.
President Biden has no significant opposition for the Democratic nomination, and only Nikki Haley remains in GOP race against former President Trump, who is running far ahead of her. Haley has vowed to stay in the race, but a large loss tomorrow could make it difficult to continue.
So our choice for this week’s Sharp Notes Monday is Paul Simon’s “The Boxer,” a song about struggles, survival and remaining a fighter, win or lose.
In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
“I am leaving, I am leaving”
But the fighter still remains.
As part of our “Sharp Notes, Sharp Thoughts” music and social media project, we share a song every Monday to start your week.
