It’s been a strange year for Congress.
In January, it took 15 rounds of voting to select a speaker, who was ousted from the post 10 months later. And at the start of December, George Santos became just the sixth member of Congress to be expelled in U.S. history.
But that wasn’t all.
Last week, controversy erupted at a congressional hearing when the presidents of Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and M.I.T. appeared to avoid giving direct answers to a question about whether they would discipline students calling for the genocide of Jews.
Their responses, which have been described as lawyerly and scholarly, did not sit well with members the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, which conducted the hearing. The White House also was among those critical of the college presidents for failing to express a stronger opinion on the topic.
The session was not the type of setting in which college presidents usually find themselves. Jennifer Rubin of the Washington Post described the presidents’ exchanges with the committee as a “public relations debacle” and a “shoddy public showing.”
Observations like Rubin’s are why this week’s Sharp Notes Monday selection is “Dazed and Confused” by Led Zeppelin.
As part of our “Sharp Notes, Sharp Thoughts” music and social media project, we share a song every Monday to start your week.
