Like most iconic songs, “Fire and Rain” continues to resonate long after its release.
The song, a single from James Taylor’s 1970 album Sweet Baby James, is partially about Taylor’s reaction to the sudden and unexpected death of a friend:
I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain
I’ve seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I’d see you again
Sadly, those lyrics resonated again this weekend with the death of Matthew Perry, who starred as Chandler Bing on the NBC television sitcom Friends from 1994 to 2004.
